A venturi scrubber is designed to effectively use the energy from the inlet gas stream to atomize the liquid being used to scrub the gas stream. The subsequent turbulence of the water caused by its impaction with the high velocity air stream breaks the water into relatively minute particles (this process is called atomization) & thoroughly mixes with the dust particles in the air stream. The clean air is vented out and the collected solids are precipitated downward to the slurry discharge or are retained for re-circulation in a recycling tank. This type of technology is a part of the group of air pollution controls collectively referred to as wet scrubbers. Venturi Scrubbers can be used for collection of both particulate and gaseous pollutants, but they are more effective in removing particles from gaseous pollutants.
Venturi scrubbers can collect particles at very high collection efficiencies, sometimes exceeding 99% and the system can be used for large inlet volumes at high temperature ranges and therefore preferred for reduction of particulate emissions in a number of industrial applications.
